In amongst the discussion about the socio-economic impact and wider legacy of events like the Olympic Games the Sports Minister Shona Robison indicated that the Ryder Cup held in Gleneagles in September 2014 could be worth £100m to the Scottish Economy.
In 2014 Scotland will play host and take account of a number of key events including the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, the 700th Anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn and the 2nd Homecoming celebrations which will all contribute to raising the profile of Scotland as a significant tourist destination and place of commerce.
Many practitioners and education establishments will be keen to use the above contexts to build on successful learning experiences created through initiatives around the London Olympics such as the torch relay and the Get Set programme. ‘Game On Scotland’ (http://www.gameonscotland.org/), the educational programme currently developed by Education Scotland will provide many opportunities to use games as a rich context for learning.

MoreAfter problems with flooding, the Forest Pitch football match is now goi
ng ahead this Saturday, 25th August.
The Forest Pitch, near Selkirk, was built by Edinburgh-based artist Craig Coulthard as part of artistic celebrations of the 2012 Olympics.
Four teams of “new Scots” – people who have come to the country for a variety of reasons – were due to play in July.
An SFA referee has now cleared the game to go ahead on Saturday.
The Forest Pitch has been built in the heart of Selkirk woodland owned by the Duke of Buccleuch.
The strips for the teams involved were designed by schoolchildren in a national competition. For more information please contact Culture Creative on 01665 833751 between 10am and 4pm or email forestpitch@culturecreative.co.uk

MoreAll primary schools in Edinburgh were invited to engage in a wider range of educational initiatives across the curriculum based on the Olympic and Paralympic values. These included for example comparative studies of ‘adopted’ countries using art, literature and geography as well as themes such as global footprint, refugees and access to education. Partnerships between for example Eco schools (‘Country in a basket’), Edinburgh Zoo (‘Animal Olympics’), the Royal Botanic Gardens (special tours), National Museums of Scotland (‘Create your own exhibition’), Sport Scotland, Edinburgh University and Heriot Watt University (foreign student placements) helped to enrich the initiative.
The programme culminated in a celebration event at Meadowbank Stadium with over 1000 pupils participating in wide variety of cultural and sporting activities.
MoreFalkirk Council has worked on a number Olympic based projects this year, 3 of which were granted ‘Inspire marks’ by London 2012. It will be our intention to re-evaluate these projects and see how we can improve on them and carry them forward for Glasgow 2014.
Going for Gold – this is an accreditation based program centred around 12 specific ‘Olympic’ challenges for schools to try and achieve – we had a fantastic uptake from schools with 46 of our 49 primary schools taking up the challenge. The program has been a huge success giving children and teachers extra opportunities and raising the awareness and appreciation for the Olympics to a fantastic level. Children from these schools will most definitely have a greater appreciation and a lasting legacy of the 2012 Olympics as a result of this project. We will be aiming to replicate this program for the Glasgow 2014 Games and it is my belief that this could actually be a national initiative.
Falkirk’s Future Stars – This is a role model based initiative where we take talented secondary school sports performers back to their local primary schools to deliver positive talks or demonstrations to younger pupils to inspire them to be the best they can be. This program has been running for 4 years now and is very successful – this year we tailored the program to incorporate the Olympic and Paralympic values and beliefs. It will be our aim to tailor the program to fit in with the Commonwealth Games over the next 2 years. Receiving a star visit is now a goal tied in to Going for Gold.
P7 Olympics / Commonwealth Games – Every 2 years we hold either an Olympic Games or a Commonwealth Games depending on what event is on – we have 49 primary schools take part with over 2,000 pupils taking part in a variety of Olympic / Paralympic / Commonwealth sports. Every school is assigned a country to represent and they do some class research on that country as well as make flags and banners of the country for the day – it is a great tool to engage pupils in the games and to take an interest in the cultural aspect of the games and competing countries. We now tie this project in with some of the Going for Gold outcomes.
The project above are a main reason as to why Falkirk and its young people have truly embraced the 2012 London Olympics, this was demonstrated by more than 10,000 school pupils and 56 schools coming out to line the route and cheer on the torch as it came through Falkirk on the 13th of June.

A Games Legacy for Scotland – Building the Legacy for Learning
Date: 31st January 2012
Venue: The Hilton, William Street, Glasgow
Places are filling rapidly for the Education Scotland national event to share and develop your knowledge, experience and ideas in developing a legacy for learning from the Games.
London 2012 and Glasgow 2014 – the Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games – put Scotland in a unique position over the next 3 years to make a lasting impact on our major national agendas: health, education, the economy, culture and the environment. London 2012 will be the biggest show on the planet with an audience of over 3 billion. It will be closely followed by Glasgow 2014 when Scotland will welcome teams from the 54 countries and 71 teams of the Commonwealth to participate in our Games. The coming together of athletes, performers and officials from across the globe in the pursuit of excellence offers educators an ideal opportunity to capture the spirit of the Games, encourage the values that underpin them and inspire young people in schools and communities across Scotland to be the best they can be and to become active, healthy, creative and enterprising global citizens.
This Games Legacy for Learning event will provide an opportunity to exchange ideas about how the Games can be used as a rich context for learning to encourage sustainable international partnerships and to support the implementation of Curriculum for Excellence. As well as showcasing some of the ways in which schools, local authorities and partners have already engaged with the Games, the event will enable practitioners to access a wide range of resources and opportunities and to network with fellow professionals and partners to support their own practice.
Education Scotland is committed to supporting the aims of the Scottish Government’s Games Legacy for Scotland plan and to working in partnership with the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee and the London 2012 ‘Get Set’ team, to enable a legacy for learning. London 2012, as well as being an exciting opportunity in its own right, provides Scotland with an ideal springboard for Glasgow 2014.
