A year ago, in March of 2012, Claire Hancox and Hilary Bombart of Education Scotland approached me with their plans for a Literacy Unconference. Taking its lead from TeachMeet and other educator-led CPD models, there was to be minimal talking from the front, lots of impromptu 5-minute slots and ‘co-create sessions’. All participants had to commit to joining an online community and sharing online the impact of the event. And so the Literacy professional learning community on Glow was born!

It now features a grand collection of professional learning and classroom resources as well as:

• videos of the all the 5-minute slots at all Literacy events since May 2012
• co-created collections focusing on wider texts, critical literacy and research skills
• contact details for over 220 literacy champions from across Scotland

The Literacy community now has offshoots such as the National Literacy Network, Librarians and the Moray Literacy hub (but more about these in future posts!)

Claire moves on this week to a post in East Dunbartonshire but she will continue to be active in the #literacy community, and maybe all its various offshoots. I wish her all the best in her new post!

We started off our new season of World of Work Wednesday events looking at Working in the Theatre and we now move to looking at other careers that you can have – and in particular working on the stage!

Artistic Director, Stage Manager, Marketing Manager are all jobs within theatre and roles you may have heard of. Live from Dundee Rep Theatre, join us on Tuesday 25th October from 4.15pm for an exclusive Glow Meet with the acclaimed playwright Liz Lochhead.

This is a rare opportunity to hear the current national poet talk about her writing and in particular the modern Scottish classic, ‘Mary Queen of Scots Got Her Head Chopped Off.’ Mary Queen of Scots Got Her Head Chopped Off is a co-production between the Royal Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh and Dundee Rep Theatre. Glowing Thursdays – Behind the Scenes at the Citizen’s Theatre

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at a National Theatre, who does what and how is the whole production put together?

Why not join us for a sneak preview behind the scenes of National Theatre of Scotland’s seminal production of “Men Should Weep.”

Join the directors, cast and crew members of the Men Should Weep company live from the citizens theatre. A tour of the set led by assistant director Phil McCormack will be followed by discussion with the director and some of the main cast who will reveal their approaches and the many processes adopted to make the show.

You will also have the opportunity to ask your own questions and find out what really goes on behind the scenes.

Surreal Encounters in Glowing Thursdays

This week Glowing Thursday is aimed at encouraging pupils and teachers to explore the interesting and rather unreal world of Surrealism.

Join us for a peek into the weird and wonderful world of Surrealism…. .what it is and who did it.
We’ll be challenging you to take part in some quick fire tasks, in the hope of learning just what made the Surrealists tick. To take part in this fun glow meet you will need to organize a few things beforehand which you can find when you sign up. During the event you will be able to work along with the artists or watch and try it out later.

Taking the Drama out of Drama Delivery

Join Lyceum Drama Artist Christie O’Carroll and Youth Theatre Producer John Glancy to learn how to lead your class in easy-to-use and effective drama exercises including warm-up and cool-down exercises, as well as more in-depth drama activities

All exercises and activities can be adapted for different age-groups and we will show you how to adapt some of the activities to support topics or themes that you are working on in class.

Introducing Stevie Dante – Imaginate’s virtual theatre critic

Imaginate’s step by step guide to evaluating the performing arts is now live and available via Glow. This interactive online resource has been designed through consultation with teachers and pupils from Whalsay Primary, Shetland and Busby Primary, East Renfrewshire as part of Imaginate’s Co-Create project.

Stevie Dante is a virtual theatre critic – he guides users through a range of activities intended to help them explore, evaluate and assess their experiences of live performance. His engaging personality, good looks and wit will ensure that both primary and secondary pupils and teachers will love using this resource.

Through the Co-Create project, pupils’ and teachers’ feedback, via a series of theatre visits, workshops and on-Glow activities, informed Imaginate’s development of the interactive resource, in partnership with Screenmedia, digital communications studio. The resource has now been launched nationally so that all teachers can use it. Imaginate’s aim now is that a new community of users will share their  performance reviews via the project Glow Group.

The new resource aims to support teachers in meeting Curriculum for Excellence Expressive Arts Experiences and Outcomes across all levels, and encourages pupils to develop critical thinking skills and become more able to express their own thoughts, feelings and opinions with confidence whilst valuing those of others.

Co-Create is funded through a partnership between Learning and Teaching Scotland and the Creative Scotland National Lottery Fund.

Tomorrow (31st March) on Glowing Thursdays we will be hosting a very different and very exciting Glow Meet with the National Gallery of Scotland.

Using some of the most recognised Impressionist paintings in the National Gallery’s collection as inspiration; this will be a fun, hands-on practical session. Teachers will work with an artist experimenting with various techniques and approaches to mark making, drawing and painting in an impressionistic style. You will be actively encouraged to experiment and problem solve using whatever materials they have available in their classroom.
