Glow is packed full of educational resources and national communities where teaching staff can collaborate with colleagues across Scotland. To showcase some of these great resources RM is hosting a week of Glow Meets featuring a few of these. These 30 minute sessions are being run twice so sign up for the time slot that suits you best!

Twig on Glow – Over 1500 high quality films covering Maths, Science, Geography and Health – complete with support resources matched to the curriculum of excellence levels 2,3 and 4.

Just2easy is an online blogging tool. Children can create, sharing and learn in an esafe environment.

The Daily What News is an online news service provided for Scottish Schools supporting the development of literacy and language across the curriculum. The site also provides a wealth of support materials.

Opening up the Future: It’s your future

It’s my Future is a song created by children, young people and adult learners to express their views on how learning needs to change to fulfil their aspirations. It demonstrates what exciting modern learning can look like.

Education Scotland want to hear from children and young people across Scotland about their hopes and aspirations for the future.

On Tuesday December 4 2012 at 11am Education Scotland will host a national event in Inveralmond Community High School. The event led, by young people, will help shape future developments in learning and teaching. This Glow TV session will enable children and young people to speak directly to Craig Munro, one of Education Scotland’s strategic directors, and share their views about learning and teaching.

These views will be taken into consideration as the organisation shapes its corporate improvement plan priorities. There will be an opportunity to see the launch of the music video and follow links to inspirational learning taking place in Scottish education.

ASN – Support through Educationally Based Theatre

Meet Engross Theatre who are a registered charity that brings the principles of the Curriculum for Excellence to children with additional support needs, through educationally based theatre.

To do this effectively they meet with teachers of children with additional support needs to discuss the children’s learning requirements. Subsequently a play is written on the topic requested by the teachers. The play’s content, language level and presentation style is tailored to the abilities and needs of the target audience. Audience participation is an important ingredient in all their commissioned plays and to maintain high standards, they employ professional writers and actors.

All their educational outcomes adhere to the principles of the curriculum for excellence. Learning outcomes are measured by question and answer sessions immediately after performances, or through questions incorporated into the plays, and from feedback forms issued to staff after performances.

And as they seek funding there is no charge to the school!!

Standards for Registration

GTC Scotland have been working on a revision of the Professional Standards, and will publish drafts of each of the revised standards this month for consultation, with a view to publishing the Standards at the start of 2013. As part of this consultation you are invited to find out more and air your views on the three new sets of Professional Standards through Glow TV events. The first of which is the Standards of Education which will take place on Thursday 30th August at 4pm.

The draft revised Standards for Registration incorporates the Standard for Provisional Registration and the Standard for Full Registration. The Standard for Provisional Registration outlines what is expected of a teacher at the end of their Initial Teacher Education and the Standard for Full Registration outlines what is expected of of a teacher at the end of their probationer year, as well as what all teachers are expected to maintain and enhance over the course of their career. By including these two standards in one document, we have attempted to demonstrate the expected progression at the start of a teacher’s professional learning journey.

This session will be led by Mairi McAra, Education Adviser at GTC Scotland, and will explore the thinking behind the revision of this standard, as well as some of the planned content.

Other events include The Standard for Career Long Professional Learning on 5th September and Standards for Leadership and Management on 13th September with a final session on all three standards The Revised GTCS Professional Standards on 27th September.

GTC Scotland Professional Standards

For the last few months, GTC Scotland has been working with colleagues across the profession on a revision of the GTC Scotland Professional Standards. The working titles of the revised standards are: Standards for Registration (encompassing a Standard for Initial Registration and a Standard for Full Registration), the Standard for Career Long Professional Learning, and The Standards for Leadership and Management (encompassing A Standard for Middle Leadership and a Standard for Headship). A generic set of values has been developed to be used across each of the standards.

The revised standards will be available online in August, as part of a consultation exercise. A programme of Glow TV events has been arranged, to enable teachers to hear our thinking about the content of the revised standards, and to engage in discussion about this. These Glow TV events will take place on the following dates 30th August, 6th, 13th and 27th September, with the first three focussing on the individual standards and the final session looking at the overall standards framework.

Education Scotland Identified Good Practice – Aboyne Academy

The practice of inter-disciplinary learning in the Secondary context is one that is central to the underpinning ethos of Curriculum for Excellence. Schools all over Scotland are looking at ways in which this can be made as purposeful and meaningful as possible for both pupils and teachers and in that aspect Aboyne Academy is no different from any other.

Aboyne Academy’s efforts in this area were given favourable comment during a recent inspection so much so that the inspection team recommended that this practice be celebrated and shared via Glow TV.
During this Glow Meet you will be able to meet the teachers from a range of departments who have begun to collaborate in order to make inter-disciplinary learning work for them. You will see how Geography, Science and Maths, Drama and Guidance and RME and Physics have all worked together on different projects in a complementary fashion. You will be able to hear how the teachers worked together and what impact they feel such working has had on the teaching and learning at Aboyne.

Archaeology – An Introduction

Do you have an interest in archaeology and want to learn more? Why not join us for a Glow TV session on Thursday 22nd March at 4pm which introduces participants to archaeology and takes a step by step exploration of the work of an archaeologist.

The session will demonstrate how archaeology can support teaching of the curriculum, especially with regard to multi-disciplinary study and cross-curricular themes, such as numeracy, literacy, Health and Wellbeing and Outdoor Learning. It will finish with practical examples of archaeological activities which can be used in the classroom and resources which are available, including ways in which Archaeology Scotland can provide support.

On completion of the course, participants will:

• Be aware of the resources and support available to them by Archaeology Scotland
• Have gained information and ideas on how to use archaeology across the curriculum
• Have gained information and ideas on how to use archaeology to support outdoor learning in and around school
• Have gained practical examples of archaeological activities which can be used in the classroom.

New Global Citizenship Drop-In in Glow TV

Every month the Developing Global Citizens team will be available on our new Glow TV channel to answer your questions about global citizenship and to signpost you to resources and ideas to help you embed global citizenship in the curriculum. This is an informal session open to any school leader or practitioner in Scotland – just drop into the Glow meet to pick our brains, find out what’s coming up or tell us what you’re up to.

The inaugural session will take place from 3.30-5.00pm on Wednesday 26th October. The theme for the first 45 minutes of this session will be A Games Legacy for Scotland and will showcase how the London Olympics 2012 and Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2014 can be used to create exciting learning opportunities for global citizenship activities and interdisciplinary learning. Find out how to get free tickets to the Olympics, hear about the Forest Pitch football strip design competition and how the organisers plan to Get Scotland Dancing.

A general Q & A/open floor session will follow from 4.15pm to 5pm. Put the day in your diary and join us for all, or part of, this event to discuss and share or get help with a particular issue.

Cabinet Secretary Glow Futures Announcement

Yesterday Michael Russell, MSP the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning made a significant announcement on the future of ICT in Schools including how Glow will be developed after September 2012.

The key points of the announcement are:

• From immediate affect the current Glow Futures procurement has been stopped.
• Over the next few weeks an open on-line discussion will take place to help share the current thinking and shape what Glow will become.
• On the 17th October the Scottish Government will hold an ICT summit in Stirling where we will consider were we have come from, the results of the on-line discussion and where we go next.

Within the Emerging Technologies Team at Education Scotland we are very excited about these announcements and look forward to having the opportunity to working with educators all over Scotland to help develop the next version of Glow. We would encourage all of you to get involved in the conversation too.

We also expect further information to be released by the Scottish Government next week on the Engage for Education website, including more details about the on-line discussion and Octobers ICT Summit.

Glow: Listening to you and improving

Glow has seen many exciting developments over the past six months. Learning and Teaching Scotland has been engaging with Glow users asking them what developments and improvements they would like to see. As part of our continuous improvement of Glow, we have introduced a number of new components and features. These include an easier to navigate homepage known as Glow Light, the opportunity to publish and share information with Glow Blogs and an area to interact with other users in Glow Forums. Other improvements encompass an increased log out time, a new Glow Mail interface and an enhanced search function.
